LOML asked me to make six Christmas Ornaments for her to use as table decorations at a function she is participating in at church. Here is one of my offerings, I'm still trying to perfect a technique to make the process more professional and efficient. The body of the ornament is from a 2x2 cherry blank and the fennel's are from walnut. Sanded with a combination of wax and mineral oil and finished with turners friction polish.

Current project is putting together segments and preparing to turn 3-4 bowls for youngest son to take to Palm Springs as gifts for some friends.

In the process I am going to rearrange the shop. Need to move my lathe and make it more accessible and easier to use.

Segmented Bowl

This bowl is about six inches in diameter. The bottom is a piece of solid red oak followed by a twelve sided segmented ring of red oak. The top accent ring is made of a twelve segment ring of walnut.

Continued working on oldest son's cabinet and took out a little time to try a couple of things I have wanted to do for some time. A clock fashioned entirely on the lathe (the base and the piece that holds the clock are walnut and the spindle is maple)and a "band saw box" (cut from a piece of walnut I had in my junk box) .
Was inspired by Steve "woodworking for mere mortals" on youtube.

There always seems to be something new in woodworking that catches ones interest. Using the lathe is my most recent interest. Segmented turning seems like a good way to use your woodworking skills and learn to turn as well....Here goes.

LuLu's cabinets are progressing slowly, took time out last week-end to attend my 50th class reunion...what a riot that was. Pictures and more later on that subject (get ready guy's)...I got some "doozies"...lol

Last night I got "the itch". Just had to saw something and put it togather. With the shop progressing (very slowly) I have been wondering how and where I am going to store my collection of woodworking magazines? An article in one of rhe magazines inspired me. I haven't decided exactly what look I'm after. Will keep you posted.

Shop doors...Some progress

Some fragmented time spent Saturday and Sunday working on the sliding doors for my under construction shop. More later as progress is made. Mortise and Tenon joints are being used, my first experiance with this joint, It has been fun and a definate learning experience. As shown in the first picture,I used an old cheapie dedicated mortiser i bought from a buddy who upgraded. It worked fine I might add. The tenons were cut on the band saw after scoring the cheek cuts on the table saw.

This is my first attempt at posting video. The content is not good I know, but I do not know yet how to edit the video. This is sort of like cutting a dovetail joint for the first time. Bear with me while I play.

Router Table

The stand alone router table is nearing completion. I decided to try something new and different in the finish. I was looking for a contrast as well as playing on the green accessory theme of my shop. I'm not sure about it now, but we will see.

So far it's been a busy summer. I have had difficulty making much progress in the new shop. Currently working on the new router table. It will be complete soon and it will be time to move on. I will post pictures when the table is finished. I tried something a little differant...you will see.

I moved my thickness planner into the shop last night. I'm not nearly finished but i did begin the first project in the new shop. My new router table. More to follow as i progress.

Moved the band saw into the new shop tonight and started the clamp storage area you see behind and beside the bandsaw. More on this later.

The three day week-end afforded me some time to continue working in the new shop (affectionately known as "pops" man cave). The clamp storage is temporary for moving purposes only.

Potential shop storage. 3 1/2 " x 16" shelf can hold lots of small items. My plan is to cover the opening with a pegboard door which will also be used as storage.

Dust Collection

The Saw is set up and tuned, my next focus will be dust collection, not fancy but will have to suffice until its time to acquire a new toy (bigger, badder dust collector).

New Toy

Thanks to my mentor "sarge" we made quick work of assembly of my new toy. The fact that he is handy and has been through the assembly before helps a lot. My little buddy Molly had fun to. (She was a little upset when she had to share her stool with Sarge, but she got over it quickly.

New Saw

I ordered a new saw, but circumstances with the manufacturer caused me to cancel the order however a suppliers sale on two top of the line saws has caught my eye and I am going to make a decision Monday and order another. Stay tuned as things take shape.

The new shop is coming along nicely, 220 to be installed this week and I have just about decided on the location and configuration of my dust collection system. Stay tuned and as soon as I finish painting the walls I will post pictures of the empty shop, and then update as i move equipment into the new shop.

Another Completed Project

Several years ago we purchased a commercially built pie safe. (this was before I got interested in the hobby). It has had a predominate place in our kitchen for a number of years. A very well made red oak piece which we truly love.
Then as we have all come to expect from our partners, something needs to change. She wanted a shelf to occupy the space beside our old friend "pie safe". We agreed on a design and I set out to try and produce an acceptable friend for our pie safe. This is the result after getting LOML's input on what she wanted and several consulations with my mentor "sarge" here are the results.

The rest is history.
